Are you a carer?

A Carer is a family member or friend who provides ongoing unpaid care to a person who is frail aged, has dementia, a disability, is palliative or has a mental illness.

What is Respite? / Why is Respite important?

Respite provides an opportunity for Carers to have a “timeout” from their usual caring role and focus on their wellbeing.

Respite care may also assist the cared for in exploring different options and opportunities within the community.

Respite helps maintain a positive relationship between the Carer (family, friend, neighbour) and the individual which they care.

Benefits of Respite

Respite has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and wellness, avoid or delay out-of-home placements, and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect.

A pilot study showed that respite may also reduce the likelihood of divorce and help sustain marriages.

Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming.

Respite provides a break, which can have health benefits.

Sixty percent of family caregivers age 19 to 64 recently surveyed by the Commonwealth Fund reported fair or poor health, one or more chronic conditions, or a disability, compared with only 33% of non-caregivers.
